When this seminal book of male nudes was first printed in 1972, its impact was resounding. There had been essays on the subject by other photographers but because of legal restraints at the time their's were cautious, timid, and ultimately mannered. With "MAN", Jim French tore the fig leaf from the frame and openly presented men, extrodinairy men in powerful and straight forward images with an honesty that was trenchant and refreshingly unaffected. To begin with, the lavish 11x14 format was a first for a book of nude men and the beautiful duo-tone black printing presented the photographs with exceptional clarity. Today, some thirty two years later, reproduction has moved up a notch or two but "MAN" retains its initial successful achievement of presenting awesomely handsome men by an artist who used his singular talent to create works of timeless elegance. Note: The few remaining copies of "MAN" are from the artist's personal archives. Copies are in prime condition, signed by the photographer, are extremely RARE and represent an historical link with the emergence of the nude male form as a legitimate expression of art.
